Using “Mental Models” to Land Your Next Gig 1

A couple of years ago, I came across the work of a professor, formerly of Columbia University, named Srikumar Rao.  He had become somewhat of a celebrity at the school for teaching a course in the MBA program on the subject of happiness, entitled “Creativity and Personal Mastery” (CPM).

Central to the course is the use of “mental models”, or what others in the field, such as Michael Ray, have referred to as heuristics. The CPM course provides an in-depth study of the formation and application of these models, which is beyond the scope of this post; however, the use of these models has a profound potential to impact not only personal development, but career development as well. Twenty Calls, One New Job 0

I wrote a resume for a client who decided that he wasn’t going to let his new resume collect dust on some job board. His proactive strategy was to make a list of twenty people he knew in his industry, with a focus on those working at companies other than his current employer and reach out to them to see if they knew of any job openings.

If they said “yes”, he’d thank them and promptly email them a copy of his resume. If not, then he’d kindly ask them to keep their “ear to the ground” and let him know if they heard of anything. From his first round of twenty phone calls, he got wind of three openings (two of which were at the same company). Read More…
